Being a working mom often feels like living two full lives at once with one defined by deadlines, responsibilities, and goals, and the other filled with bedtime stories, snack requests, and the constant, beautiful chaos of raising children. In 2025, I found myself stepping fully into both worlds in a way I never had before. It was our first official year launching our seasonal pumpkin delivery and design business, My Front Porch, and it quickly became one of the most challenging and rewarding chapters of my life.

As if starting a business wasn’t enough, I also found out I was pregnant with my third baby right as our season began. The timing felt almost comical. First trimester nausea, exhaustion, and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with early pregnancy could have easily slowed me down. But instead, it did the opposite. It pushed me. Every early morning and late night became a reminder of why I started this in the first place especially after bedtime, when the house finally quieted down and the real second shift began: reloading trailers full of pumpkin orders for the next day, editing social media posts, and doing whatever it took to keep the business moving forward.

I definitely wasn’t doing this alone. My partner-in-crime, Jen Carmichael and I leaned on each other constantly emotionally, mentally, and, let’s be honest, nutritionally. On the days when I felt completely drained (which, during the first trimester, was basically every day by 2 p.m.), she was there to lift me up… and occasionally steer us toward the nearest drive-thru. Between client installs, you could usually find us swinging through a fast food drive-thru or gas station like it was part of our official business operations. And yet, somehow, in between the snack runs, the laughter, and the “we’ve got this… right?” moments, we stayed completely committed to our clients and our vision. We weren’t just delivering pumpkins, we were building something meaningful. Something rooted in creativity, joy, community and probably a few too many gas station pit stops.

Honestly, those chaotic, hilarious in-between moments are what made it all so special. Because behind every perfectly styled porch was a lot of hard work, a lot of determination, and at least one emergency snack run to keep me going. What started as a seasonal business quickly turned into something much bigger as it became a true lesson in perseverance. I was raised by a working mom who ran her own business, so I’ve seen firsthand how powerful that example can be. It shaped the way I view hard work, ambition, and what it means to build something of your own.

Now, I carry that same drive into my own life, wanting my kids to witness the journey up close. I want them to see what it looks like to chase a dream, to create something from the ground up, and to stay committed even when it’s hard. Because while there are sacrifices along the way, there’s also so much fulfillment in the process. There’s something really special about building a life that not only brings you joy, but also impacts and uplifts the people around you.

Of course, it hasn’t been without challenges. Balancing family life, pregnancy, and the demands of a growing business tested me in ways I didn’t expect. There were moments of doubt, moments of overwhelm, and moments where rest felt impossible. But there were also moments of pride by seeing our designs come to life, watching our client base grow, and realizing that we were actually doing it.

One of the greatest gifts of running a seasonal business is the balance it allows. During the busy months, I fully step into my role as an entrepreneur, pouring my energy into growing and sustaining the business. And when the season ends, I get to shift my focus back to my family in a more intentional way. It’s not perfect, but it’s a rhythm that works for us. My corporate background in project management played a huge role in bringing this dream to life. Planning, organizing, and executing under pressure became skills I relied on daily. But this business added something that corporate life never could, which is heart.

One of Rebecca's greatest joys is seeing her children become part of the My Front Porch journey. Daughter Leah lends a helping hand while decorating a front porch with pumpkins, helping create a beautiful fall display filled with seasonal charm and curb appeal.

At the end of the day, this journey is about more than pumpkins. It’s about building something my family can be proud of, creating memories with my kids and my business partner, and proving that with passion, support, and a lot of determination, it’s possible to build a life that blends both purpose and presence.

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d trade in a corporate title for a trailer full of pumpkins, a creative design strategy, and a pair of heavy-duty work gloves, I probably would’ve smiled politely and thought it was only a dream, not a reality.

And yet, here we are.

Leaving corporate America to launch My Front Porch wasn’t just a career move, it was a full-body, full-brain, full-heart commitment. Equal parts exciting, empowering, and yes… a little nerve-wracking. When you start something from scratch, you quickly realize you don’t even know what you know yet. But one thing becomes crystal clear, you’ll never find out unless you have the courage to take the leap.

So, that’s exactly what Rebecca Paxton and I did. With laser focus, a clear vision, and just enough grit to carry us through.

We set out to build a premier pumpkin delivery, design and disposal company serving clients across the Dallas- Ft. Worth Metroplex. What might look like a picture-perfect fall display on the outside is, behind the scenes, a business that demands brains, tenacity, and let’s be honest- serious physical stamina. This is not a “sit at your desk and sip coffee in the air conditioning” kind of venture. This is a “haul tens of thousands of pounds of pumpkins, create Pinterest worthy designs, and still have energy to post on our social media handles kind of business.

And we did it all. Proudly.

In our first year, we registered the company, built an e-commerce site, established relationships with trusted suppliers, secured storage, built a robust marketing strategy and successfully launched with intention. We wore every hat imaginable- web designer, social media strategist, accountant, logistics coordinator, and yes… pumpkin loader. We personally delivered and installed tens of thousands of pounds of pumpkins for hundreds of clients across DFW-then came back to haul them away and donate them to non-profit animal rescues, laddering back to our commitment of Sustainably Grown. Responsibly Shared. Compassionately Donated.

We sweated. We laughed. We showed up every single day ready to outwork yesterday’s version of ourselves. We came home filthy, bruised, scratched, and completely exhausted while icing our hands at night like athletes after a championship game. Turns out, “no pain, no gain” applies just as much to entrepreneurship as it does to leg day at the gym.

And we’d do it all over again in a heartbeat because this is ours.

What started as a bold idea has grown into something truly special. We’ve been incredibly intentional about building not just a business, but an incredible brand- one rooted in detail, quality, and creating a “wow” experience for every client. That attention to detail has paid off. Today, we’ve grown a vibrant social media community of nearly than 40,000 followers and have had the honor of being recognized for our expertise by outlets like Apple News, Forbes, Martha Stewart, Better Homes & Gardens and Voyage.

We are incredibly proud of what we’ve built.

And at the same time, we remain deeply humble and grateful. Because behind every install, every like, every feature, and every returning customer is trust and we don’t take that lightly.

At our core, My Front Porch is about bringing joy to people’s homes, businesses and special events. And that mission doesn’t stop with our clients. Each year, we are committed to giving back to our community by donating our pumpkins and design services to a deserving 501.c.3 nonprofit organization. This past year, we were honored to partner with Hugs Cafe in McKinney who is committed to enhancing the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through training and employment. Supporting causes like this isn’t just what we do- it’s who we are, and a quiet reminder of our life’s purpose.

So yes, we may spend our fall seasons lifting pumpkins like it’s our job (because it is), obsessing over design details, driving business efficiencies and pushing ourselves to be better every single day. But we’re also building something with heart, purpose, and staying power.

And if there’s one thing this journey has taught us, it’s that when courage meets a relentless work ethic and unwavering determination, you don’t just build something- you create something truly extraordinary.

Even if it starts with a pumpkin.
